Historic Court Ruling Confirms Polluters Face Accountability for Climate Harm

Still from our documentary “Saúl v. RWE”

A landmark ruling by the Higher Regional Court of Hamm in Germany has affirmed that major polluters can, in principle, be held legally accountable for climate damage—even across borders. Though the court dismissed the specific claim brought by Peruvian farmer Saúl Luciano Lliuya against German energy giant RWE, it recognized that emitters like RWE may bear responsibility for their share of global emissions and the resulting impacts. This legal breakthrough is a milestone for climate justice and could influence similar lawsuits worldwide. Resilience Creative proudly documented this pivotal case in our in-progress documentary Saúl v. RWE, highlighting Saúl’s courageous fight to hold one of the world’s largest polluters accountable.
